Using published census data SASPRI has developed a ward level South African Index of Multiple Deprivation (SAIMD) for 2011. It comprises a combination of four domain indices – material deprivation, employment deprivation, education deprivation, and living environment deprivation. This provides an important tool  for undertaking diagnostic evaluation at small area level. Users include the Eastern Cape Provincial government; Limpopo Provincial government; the Health Systems Trust; the Human Sciences Research Council; the Medical Research Council; and the Western Cape Department of Health. The main finding to emerge from the analysis of the SAIMD 2011 is that former homelands remain amongst the most deprived areas in South Africa – click here to see an article published on the Econ 3×3 website. Academic institutions or public bodies who would like access to the data should contact info@saspri.org for further details.
